Even after living all these years eating South Indian food, and after being married to a Malayali since the past 7 and something years, I still don't know how to cut open a coconut. From the past few days I have taken up the challenge to master it.. Lol.. This was my second coconut broken open in 36 blows! :) :) Phew! Hard work!

I think you missed out on removing all those "beard" before breaking it open.
To open hit at the centre (imagine it has an equator and hit only at the equator line) A few hits all around should do the trick. You will be considered an expert when you can do it in one shot.
